Lucknow: Jaypee Punjab Warriors defeated hosts Uttar Pradesh Wizards by 4-3 margin to move to third position in the HIL points table, at the Dhyan Chand Astroturf Stadium, in Lucknow on Sunday.
The Warriors looked in stunning form from the first quarter when brilliant team attack by the visitors was converted into a goal by SV Sunil in the second minute of the match to take his side 1-0 ahead. Within two minutes he scored another goal with a superb effort.
The visitors extended their lead again in the eight minute, when their skipper Jamie Dwyer was spot on with his drag flick.
The Wizards tried to come back into the match with some smart moves, when and Sander Baart managed to score his side’s first goal of the match with clean strike. However, all their hopes were dashed when four minutes later visitors earned another penalty corner, with Christopher Ciriello scored from a drag flick, helping Punjab Warriors to extend their lead by three goals again.
In the second and third quarter both teams tried to take the possessions of the ball as much as possible, however none of the teams were able to convert them into goal.
In the fourth quarter, in the 65th minute, Wizards earned a penalty corner, with skipper Raghunath hit a brilliant drag flick to reduce his team’s margin. After couple of minutes Jeroen Hertzberger made it 3-4 for the hosts with a superb goal. He controlled the ball from the right flank, which he then pushed into the Warriors goalpost.
With only three minutes left in the match, Wizards tried to put a lot more pressure on Punjab Warriors side but were unable to score that equaliser.
After the match Jaypee Punjab Warriors captain Jamie Dwyer said, “ We had a good game today and the team is looking forward to continue playing in this same way. Our combined efforts are finally showing and very soon we are really happy with our performance”.
Jaypee Punjab Warriors will next take on Delhi Waveriders on January 29 in Delhi.
